Stanford recently announced it would become the first U.S. university to require new medical students to pick "scholarly concentrations" which is roughly the equivalent to the undergraduate major.
With this move, Stanford University Medical Center has overhauled its curriculum and required students to pick a concentration by the end of their first year. Many believe this policy will put Stanford at the forefront of medical education.
Harvard Medical School states it is considering a similar requirement. In a further indication that Stanford’s new policy may become the new trend, many of the nation's other top medical schools, including Michigan and Northwestern, are introducing dual-degree programs aimed at providing students with specialization opportunities before they begin their residency programs.
