To anyone:
I couldn't find a topic with my question, although I'm sure that someone has already asked...does anyone have any information regarding military med schools? I heard there was one somewhere in the east coast or in southern california, but no one has been able to confirm. I've spoken to a air force recruit and he doesn't even know what I'm talking about. I know you can get the military to pay for school with a promise to serve, but I thought there was an actual "military" medical school somewhere.
Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks in advance |

There is a feature currently running on www.medicalschooladmission.com that deals with issues relating to military scholarships. You may want to check it out. |

The only "military" medical school that I know of is the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, located in Bethesda, Maryland (near Washington, D.C.). Their website is here:
http://www.usuhs.mil/
I don't know though if this is a medical school and an officer training school (like West Point, Naval Academy, etc.) or just a medical school operated by the US military. I do know though that it is not considered among the most elite schools, so there would be advantages of going elsewhere. |

| My son graduated from USUHS a number of years ago. Upon entrance, each student is commissioned as an officer in a branch of the military or as a member of the public health service. They serve as 0-1's until graduation. At that time, they become 0-3's (without ever having served as 0-2's). The obligation incurred is a little complicated but is probably explained on their website. I worked in the surgical field for 20 years and think it is considered to be a very good school. In addition, it's a wonderful opportunity.....if that's what interests you! By the way, it's the only school of its type in the country. The graduation is REALLY neat! |

I found a flyer at school last year that had some information about the Navy paying for your medical school education fees along with other expenses. I recently emailed the guy in charge and asked for some additional information and it was sort of helpful, this was his email: delatorrev@cnrc.navy.nil
However, i think it would be good to approach this with caution... many of my friends who went to the military got screwed in one form or another, none that wanted to go to medical school with the military but still... and also they require you to serve some time and they aren't specific about whether they're going to ship you off somewhere or what the deal is.
