Sex ... or Football? New Survey Shows Men Now Spending More Time Thinking About Fantasy Football Than Thinking About Sex

GARDEN CITY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 21, 2004--The surprising results are in, and illustrate that times have certainly changed for many men. According to a new nationwide survey of men who participate in fantasy football leagues, they are spending more time thinking about Fantasy Football -- where participants create and manage their own "teams" made up of professional players and compete each week within their leagues to win money -- than they are thinking about sex. For years, sex has been believed to be the number one thought on people's minds daily; however, this survey offers a new look at what's currently on the mind of many of today's men.
The online survey of men age 22 and over showed that more than 40% of respondents rate Fantasy Football as their number one thought during the day, as compared to only 30% who say that thinking about sex still remains as their top daily thought. In terms of how much time during the day men are actually thinking about Fantasy Football, 58% of respondents say they spend from one to three hours each day thinking about it, as opposed to 48% of respondents who are thinking about sex from one to three hours a day. Even more surprising, a full 25% of respondents claim to spend from four to eight hours a day thinking about Fantasy Football; in comparison, only 12% of respondents think about sex for that amount of time during the football season.
Following Fantasy Football and sex, respondents' top thoughts included money (18%) and food (3%). The survey was conducted through e-mails sent to more than 800 men across the country, with a final sample size of 280 respondents, a 35% return rate.
"How often people think about sex on a daily basis has long been known, but what we didn't really know is how much men today are also thinking about Fantasy Football, whether creating their teams, analyzing statistics or choosing which players to start each week," says Ian Millman, co-founder of FantasyFootballChamps.com, which conducted the survey through subscribers to the company's informational website. "Although we realize that Fantasy Football has grown in popularity in recent years, even we were taken aback by the fact that it has quickly taken over the number one spot as to what many men are thinking about in their spare time these days, at least during football season," adds Jon Millman, the other co-founder of FantasyFootballChamps.com.
More than 10 million people today participate in various fantasy sports leagues, and most, according to results indicated by this new survey, are taking the concept very seriously. Fifty-eight percent of this survey's respondents consider Fantasy Football "an obsession" for them, with an additional 31% viewing it as a "hobby." Ten percent claimed it was a "creative outlet" -- and only 1% of respondents look at Fantasy Football as "a way to pass time."

I know this is a PR piece and not NY Times (oh wait, that's no better  ). I also know a lot of guys care about fantasy football, but this is true, it's disturbing.
I love football, but never got into fantasy football. For the record, I think about football a lot but not more than sex.

My first comment is about the crediblity but I do have buddies who love thier fantasy football. Me? I like the articles because I can't get enough regular football news on the Internet. News about TO and Boston with their new teams is cerebral (when well written) to me. I like to root for teams though and not players.

| It's just microevolution. Not all guys can get sex, and even those that can can be told "no." Other than 2am-5am PST when the webmaster is working on the site, you can get your fantasy football whenever you want. The mind simply drifts towards the more faithful stimulus. |

| This is PR but I wouldn't call it good PR. You are basically calling fantasy football guys nerds and making them think about doing something else since fantasy sports so its implied will kill your libido. |
