Hi,
I am currently a senior at the University of Florida, graduating in Dec. 2010 with a major in Zoology and a minor in African Studies. I have a cumulative GPA of 3.87 and my GPA in my major is 4.0. I have been volunteering in a research lab since freshman year, and have been working on an independent study for the past year. I have presented an oral presentation at a symposium and won an Honorable Mention award. I have not taken the GRE yet, but am studying with Kaplan for the next 3 months to prepare for taking it. I am trying to get some field-work experience this summer, and will most likely be doing something ecology related. I should have already mentioned this, but I am looking to apply to a PhD program in Evolutionary Biology, which is a passion of mine, and also the core focus of the independent study I have been working on (systematics, phylogenetics, specifically). And I will be writing an Honors Thesis (in hope of publishing it) in the Fall. I also have a love for African Studies and have spent a full semester living at the University of Dar es Salaam, TZ. I would like to emphasize my interest in studying in Africa to the schools I apply to.
My absolute top choices for schools are Yale, Brown, Harvard, and Dartmouth. I realize that these are the hardest schools to get into and do not actual expect to get into them, but my professors have told me to apply.
Do you think that I have a shot at these schools? I understand that a lot of it has to do with getting along with professors available, but I would just like a ball-park idea of where I should consider myself competitive. I also have a list of non-ivy schools which I will definitely be applying to as well.
Thanks for your time! ~Laura J |
