I read spam is over 80% of total email sent and it's costing us billions of dollars.
I think a grass roots fihgt is the way to go.
At work we get a lot of fax spam. Its normally cheap trips to Florida and there is a toll free number to fax back to. We collect these fax spams and at the end of the day, we fax each number 50 pages of blank paper to each number. It ties up their expensive toll free line and let's them know how we feel about their wasting our paper.
Here are some rules we should follow. Feel free to add more. This could be a valauable thread.
1. Never click on anything in a spam email. Even if you want to visit a porn site or get something enlarged, find a non spam source for that need. Only about 1 in 10,000 knuckleheads have to fill out the mortgage quote or buy some stupid pill to make it profitable for the spammers so never never never ever do it. They get paid about $20 for each mortgage application and several cents for each porn click through.
2. NIgerian scams. Dear Sir, I have inherited $15 million and I need your help to get the money out of my country. I'll give 30% for your help. We've all seen this, right? Here's what to do. Email them back from a different email address. (They pass your email to other criminals.) Play them along but don't ever send them any money. Email them a weird pciture, tell them to print it out and then send you a photo of them holding it so you know what they look like. (Makes it harder to do Photo Shop.) Ask them lots of open ended questions in your emails that will take them a while to reply to. Make them do a lot of work scanning pics, replying to emails. Tell htem you sent money to them to a Western Union 100 miles from where they are. If you do this, they will be so busy with you they wont get poor Grandma who knows no better.
3. If there is a toll free number in the spam call them. Let them pay for the incoming call. Say something like "Do you like it when someone wasts your time? well neither do I so stop sending me spam" Feel free to curse them, ask them lots of questions about the product and so forth. They hate it if you ask them for a name and biz location. If they volunteer any info tell them you live nearby and want to visit.
I'm not an expert so please add or correct if you have better ideas. Poeple, we can fight and beat spam if we put our minds to it. Lets take back OUR Internet!

I like your ideas. I have a friend who feels no shame in harrassing "courtesy" callers. When they call to sell something, if he isn't busy or is just writing a paper, he'll stay on the line for as much as half an hour tying them up by pretending he's interested, but never committing. As long as you are interested they have to stay on the line. Me, I'm just tired of receiving offers to refinance my dorm room! |

Good thread!
This is an email harvester that has already spammed me several times. I know this is email harvesting because the return address changes and because the domain to click doesn't match the email address. Finally, I don't have that many people out there who would want so much information. (I got this about 30 times over the weekend from different return addresses.)
The subject title loks something like: A user at our website is trying to meet people who know you.
The email reads something like:
****NOT COMMERCIAL EMAIL****
Someone is looking into your background via our website.
One of our users has begun the process of meeting people who know you via our website for the purpose of researching your background.
This email was automatically sent to you to inform you of this. The user doing the research provided us with your email address.
Our world is one of increasing internationalization, mobility of labor, immigration and upward mobility in the workforce. As a result, towns and neighborhoods where everyone knows each other are increasingly rare. It is increasingly less common for a person to work at the same company for their entire life, or to even live in the same city or town. In life today we are exposed to and meet a greater variety of people, and with the advent of the Internet we can meet people far outside of our geographical area of residence.

Our website is a valuable background research tool that enables its users to access the information source known as word-of-mouth on an international scale.

This one came from SUPPORT@WORD-OF-MOUTH-INFO.BIZ. Notice how word-0f-mouth-info.biz doesn't match the links it wants me to click? Also, some of these email came from different addresses (Don't ask me hwo I remembered when I already deleted them but I did and not all of them were .biz.)
If there isn't a virus or spyware at the end of these links then at a minimum they know it is a good email address they should continue to spam. (Hence I put Xs above in teh link so you guys don't get me in trouble.)
Well, I took out time from my morning to warn you, so I hope this helps coutn as my daily contribution to the betterment of mankind. |

I just received the following spam. I can't believe **anyone** would click on this, but apparently so or they wouldn't waste their time sending this. (They'd send us mortgage or porn spams instead.)

| Doesn't seem too far-fetched to me. There are just way too many people out there barely making it paycheck to paycheck and even more still not making it. And lots of people in low end jobs with broken dreams. The people who click on that stuff probably want to believe it's real so they don't doubt it. Belief without doubt - it's very dangerous stuff. |

Good point. I'll admit I hadn't thought of it that way. I guess I should count my blessings that my situation is a bit better. Makes it even more disgusting to think of the spammers though taking advantage of those poor people. |

| Think before you call. I got an email to call for my diploma based on life exp and it was not a toll free number. It probably bills you $10/minute and then additional to get your Ph.D. diploma based on your life exp. |

It's pretty slow here this week and, the follower I am, (have to work on that for my apps!) I decided to call a toll free number for a $99 vacation that was faxed to my office. It felt good to waste that person's time and then tell tehm I did it because they spam-faxed us.
Their number is 1-866-240-0789. Please do call them on their toll free line and tell them what you think about the way they waste company's paper and printer cartridges. My company pays for their advertising. |

I did call the number Page1. I said, "Hello. How do you feel when someone wastes your time?" "OK, now you know how I feel when you ___ fax spam to me."
Felt good.
Here is the email address of some Nigerian who wants to share 15 million with me. Feel free to email him to. This way he will not have time to bother people dumb or naive enough to go alontg with his scam. johnugo2004@yahoo.co.in

Just use your computer to fight back. click 99 copies for each send. setting 500 tries (redial) for each call if detected with busy signal. you can have computer helpping you to call the toll free spam 24/7/365 any time you want to. They (the receivers)have to lift up phone calls at least 5000 times a day in order to cancel the computer setting calls received from all places. They will be well busy and get something to do at least from now on. Let's fight back with spam faxes or e-mails.

| I have been getting a lot of spam asking me to call this number: 1-831-854-3939. It is for a diploma and according to an area code locator, the call is from Monterey CA. Please join me in calling this number and using lots of profanity on these a$$holes. |

I received another Nigerian scam email this morning. THis time I responded with a bit of skeptism. I said I needed proof he was real and I emailed him from an old hotmail account telling him emailing me at work was dangerous. I guess thsi sounded more real because here is his repsonse.
I think he needs to wait a while before I email him back. If he thinks I was on a biz trip, he might think I have more money.
Any suggestions on what I should say? I was thinking that I tried to reach him, but couldn't get through. (Dumb American who deosn't know how to call overseas.) I could give him the diploma phone number. Or I could demand more info from him since he must trust me since he emailed me first. Please do share ideas!

Hi,
I write to thank you most sincerely for your reply to my proposal. As this transaction is of high magnitude, I will appreciate that we speak on the phone and get aquainted with one another. My major concern is the trust and reliability that I will have my share when the fund is transfered into your account. You can therefore call me on my number +234 80 33252871. Also, send to me your phone and fax so that I can contact you too.
For us to effect this, I will send in an application on your behalf to the head of international remitance division of my company that your cousin's fund be transfered to you as the benficiary. Once approval is given, you will be contacted directly for the transfer process. Once an order of transfer is given, I will take a leave of absence and travel down to meet with you for my share.
All I need from you is confidence and we will be able to pull this through in 14 working days. Send to me your details so that I can go to the probate registry where I will legalise your name the legal cousin of late Mitchel
I expect your urgent response.
Regards, Paul

| I dunno, personally I'd just stay away from that altogether. Just because he wants the money doesn't mean he doesn't have the money to put out a hit on you! I generally try to not get people real angry, and I definitely try not to anger people whose response capabilities I don't know. |
