The Army Times reports that so few people are applying for the Deparment of Defense's Health Professions Scholarships that the Department is considering doubling enrollment at the Uniformed Services University Medical School in order to meet the miltary's health care needs.
The Health Professions Scholarship program normally recruits most of the health and dental care professionals who serve in the U.S. armed forces. In recent years, 70 per cent of Navy physicians and 80 per cent of Navy dentists have entered the service through the scholarship program.
In 2005, however, the Navy only had 162 takers for the 291 scholarships available that year.
The UNU Medical School, located in Bethesda, Maryland, currently enrolls about 175 first-year students each year, making it the 15th largest medical school in the U.S. A proposal under consideration by DOD would increase first-year enrollment to as many as 350 students.
Health Professions Scholarship recipients receive a $1,292 monthly stipend in addition to having their medical school tuition and textbook costs covered. In return, they agree to perform one year of military service for every year of medical education that was funded.
For more information, see "Medical School Could Expand," in the August 22, 2006 Army Times.
