AdmissionsConsultants,
I know most schools don't specify a minimum work experience requirement, but I was still wondering how realistic it is for me to get accepted into a Top 5 school. I have a 3.8 UG GPA and a 750 GMAT. I worked part-time throughout college, and I am now working full-time as an IT Director for a small Utah-based marketing company. I have progressed rapidly in this company and have made significant contributions to its rapid growth, but I will only have had about 1 year of experience here when I apply for B-school (and 2 years before I attend). With that said, I will probably be a VP of my department before I leave. How much of a setback will this be to my application chances? Thanks in advance for any insight. |

With a good story and ‘wow’ factor, you should be competitive at the top 5 schools. We’ve helped many applicants with 2 years of experience gain admission to the top program.
The quality of work experience is far more important than the quantity. It appears you have some good experiences to spin for the admissions committees.
Best of luck with your applications!

Hallo, I know that everybody is asking about interview invitations etc. My question is when top B-Schools (HBS, Columbia, Stanford) sent rejections, by the notification date or earlier, as they go through each application? Thanks in advance, Taki from Athens |

i have yet another scenario for brief evaluation by o' smart one, david:
me in a nutshell:
low undergrad gpa, yet started and organized music/cultural festival (expanding every year)
currently getting a MFA in arts management with high gpa
gmat is about 650
have had internship experience with sara lee and other local organizations
plenty of extra-curricular experience and local board exposure
will do peace corps after current degree
my story (in three years, when i intend to apply): i have immersed myself in the non-profit and arts sector. would like to take the creativity, learn concrete business skills, and mix them to start my own music production company.
in your humble opinion, how does a top b-school see this? (personally, i think it is great)
thanks |

Most schools wait until the deadline and inform all their applicants at once. Be patient. If you have already submitted your application, there is nothing you can do unless you are invited for an interview or placed on a waitlist. (In the case of waitlists, there are still some schools for which you can do nothing constructive.)
Best of luck with your applications!

The graduate GPA is nice, but it still won’t completely offset your undergrad GPA. Combine this with a lower-than-average GMAT, and your academic qualifications will be carefully scrutinized. (This is a bad thing, by the way, as you should want the admissions officers to spend their evaluation time on your leadership, senior management potential, bullet-proof reasons for wanting an MBA, etc. In other words, you want them to stay focused on all your good traits instead of your weaknesses.)
have had internship experience with sara lee and other local organizations

It certainly has some spin potential. The schools see a good number of Peace Corps applicants each year, so don’t bank too heavily on this aspect of your candidacy.
thanks
Best of luck with your future applications!

Your academic qualifications are a bit low, but everything else appears OK. You were a late applicant and that will work against you too as late applicants are not competing for all of the incoming spots; many admission offers have already been made. Since you have already submitted your applications, there is nothing you can do right now unless you are have an interview or if you are waitlisted at Tuck. As long as you didn’t raise any ‘red flags’ in your applications, there would be no reason why you wouldn’t be able to reapply – if necessary.
I’d be very interested in discovering if 620 is your true ‘plateau’ on the GMAT as something should be done about the GPA/GMAT combo if a reapplication proves necessary.
There are many proprietary positioning techniques we share with our clients. You can feel free to contact us directly if the positioning becomes a necessity.
Thanks and Regards, M
Best of luck with your future applications!

Admissions Consultants:
Thanks in advance for your help. I am a round 2 applicant for HBS, Wharton and Tuck (Jan. round) and have recently submitted an application for Columbia. I also submitted round 1 for Stanford. My relevant stats/info are:
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with 2nd major in Economics from Northwestern University / GPA: 3.18 / GMAT: 740 / Three years of investment banking experience. Direct promotion to Associate. 1.5 years of high-yield asset management and hedge-fund experience at a leading private equity firm.
I expected to be a competitive candidate for a top 5 school. However, I was not accepted to Stanford or Wharton (not invited to interview). I have yet to be offered an interview at HBS (admission date is March 30). In examining my application with colleagues, we seem to think that the largest gap in my application was a lack of a recommendation from my current employer. I do not think my employer would be pleased if I were to leave given my shorter than average tenure and because our group is understaffed. I addressed this in my additional information essay. However, since I work at a large private equity fund, where several former employees have gone on to top business schools, and several alumni currently work here, I think that my explanation contradicts precedent.
Do you agree with this conclusion? Could a letter from a peer in my group supporting my rationale be helpful and would it even be helpful only two weeks from decision dates?
Thank you very much! |

Hi David,
I'm planning on applying to business school either this fall or next (Depending on if my application is polished and complete - I plan to apply ED to Columbia). Like everyone else here, I'm a little wary of how best to present myself while minimizing the faults on my app. I took the GMAT last fall and got a 740. I also have quite a bit of extra curriculars in college (Varsity soccer, clubs) as well as post college. I worked at a mutual fund company for 2 years out of college, and then moved to investment banking m&a for 1+ year. I have passed the level 1 and 2 CFA examinations, and am currently a level 3 candidate.
I went to a well respected liberal arts school in New England, and earned a B.S. in Chemistry with an overall GPA of 3.2. I had a difficult senior year due to my junior year abroad. I had to take a really heavy load of courses in order to graduate on time and my major (Chemistry) is one of the hardest at my school (No curving on tests, etc). Needless to say my gpa took a serious hit, diving by .2 points. This is the only real blemish that I worry about on my app - I see the average for many of the top 5 schools is around 3.4-3.6. Will this disqualify me from making the "academic qualifications hurdle"? If so, I often see you refer to an "alternate transcript", what exactly does this mean and how effective is this? Would you suggest that I do this?
Thanks,
Conner |

Without reviewing your application, it is very difficult to determine what exactly went wrong. Everything seems OK and with some decent extracurriculars and a good ‘wow’ factor, you should have been very competitive in the R2 pools at HBS, Wharton and Tuck. I doubt the lack of a recommendation from your current employer harmed you. My gut tells me that your story and themes probably raised ‘red flags’ about your sound reasons for why an MBA, why XYZ b-school, etc.
We do offer a special $195 ding analysis package which is described in detail on our website. If anyone is interested in the idng analysis, waitlist assistance package, or a pre admission consultation, they can go to our website and/or call us at our office number: +1 703.242.5885.
Thank you very much!

I can’t say concluvively without reviewing your transcript, but I also can’t imagine any of our consultants would recommend that you take any additional classes. We routinely help applicants with GPAs further below the median gain admission to top b-schools and, if properly mitigated in your story, you should have no problems clearing the ‘hurdle.’
Applicants are much more likely to fall short due to weaknesses in their stories and themes. I’d focus your efforts on these areas instead of your GPA.
Thanks,
Conner
Best of luck with your future applications!

It's now March 15th - 15 days until notification for 2nd round HBS applicants. I have not received an interview invitation. I keep reading that invites go out as late as 1-week, 2-weeks, the HBS website says as late as the day before, and what looks like some quack website about a UPS guy who got in without an interview.
I'm starting to get that sinking feeling in my stomach... of course HBS will say the day before because it fits with everyone "finding out" at the same time. But so many other schools send their invites out at the same time or much earlier. Do you really know that invites can still come out for HBS or is that just a guesstimate? When's the latest you've ever actually heard of someone getting an invite?
I know I need to wait this out, but it would be really helpful if someone could say with experience that invites are still going out or that I should give up the ghost.
(And this site is great, by the way. Thanks for any help you can provide)
Ave it! |
