Hi and thanks for your follow-up inquiry.
Thank you for the response; I also wanted to know regarding the GPA in admission..I believe I asked whether grades from your CC before transferring to a 4-year university will be equally calculated by MBA schools..or is it mostly geared toward your university GPA that is factored? Are they each given equal weight or is the university average basically used to determine admission? Thank you in advance.
Every school calculates that differently. Furthermore, it's not just the GPA they calculate but also the difficulty of the classes, the trend in the GPA, etc that will ultimately determine how the GPA will be viewed.
Best of luck on your applications!

Hi,
I have a 660 gmat with a 5 AWA score and 3.35 gpa from UCLA in Sociology/French. I have been working for 4 years at an Adventure Travel Company as a Trip Leader and have taken on lots of additional responsibilities. I am a coordinator for the largest region in France and I have lots of international experience. My job requires a huge amount of leadership and independence and I have showed lots of quick progression.
I hold numerous other positions of leadership including a coordinator role for the largest region in France and I have experience in many different countries including Australia, Switzerland, Ireland, France, Cambodia and Vietnam. During this time, I co-led trips for 25 people and handled all logistics including hotels, vans, bicycles, routes, interpretive talks, sub-contractors, and varying personalities. My job involved a great deal of independence, leadership, teamwork, creative thinking, problem solving, follow through and professionalism.
I want to make sure that this all comes through and it doesn't sound like I have just been "leading bike trips" in france for the past 4 years.
What do you think are my chances at getting into a top program? I am applying round 2 to Stanford, Haas, Stern, Kellogg, Babson, and Texas.
Thanks for any advice you can give! |

Hi and thanks for your inquiry. I apologize for the time lag in answering this query. I wasn't aware this had been here so long. Of course, as I've stated before, the quickest replies go to phone calls and second quickest to email inquiries.

If you can show quick progression, you could be competitive at any of those programs. I do believe the admissions committees are probably going to view your job title with a bit of skepticism, however.
Best of luck on your applications!

David,
I am hoping to get your advice as to whether I should try to apply to business school. I know it's not the classic query you're asked but since it is tied to where I can reasonably expect to get in, I figure you're a great resource.
I am currently two and a half years out of law school. I worked as an attorney at a large NY firm for a year and a half and got laid off earlier this year. For the few months I have been teaching. I graduated from a top tier undergraduate school and a top 5 law school with slightly above average GPAs.
I have not yet taken the GMAT. I took and passed the CFA level I while in law school (have not yet taken level II). Based on scoring well within the top percent on the SAT and LSAT I believe I can do well on the GMAT assuming I study vigorously.
I do not have significant leadership experience.
Assuming a top GMAT score (700+) and help from an admissions consultant such as yourself, could you ballpark the odds I would get into a top business school and, if I do, whether my career hopping would be a detriment.
Thank you. |

I have just decided to pursue my MBA. However, I have not yet taken the GMAT. Is it still possible to be admitted into a graduate program?

Hi David,
This forum has been immensely helpful. I just applied to NYU-SCPS MS in Management & Systems Program. Since they don't have a class profile online, I was wondering if you had any insight about my admission chances.
GMAT: 620 Percentile: 72 Quant: 43 Percentile: 68 Verbal: 32 Percentile: 64
Education: Undergraduate: BA in Economics from Boston University GPA: 2.89 (I started out as a Bio major and that affected my undergraduate GPA very negatively) Took several Masters level courses my senior year - average grade B Graduated Jan 2009
Work Experience: Internships: Metlife, Natixis Global Asset Management, Barclays Wealth in London, Bloomberg Currently working at UBS Financial Services
Several extra activities - Senior Analyst on a Live Fund; Finance conference participant
I'm also looking to apply to business schools in the future. Most definitely after re-taking my GMAT. I'm looking at Stern, Haas, and Wharton.
Any input would be appreciated! Thank you!

You would appear to be competitive at a top 10-15 b-school with well-prepared applications. Just how well we can spin your career progression and need for an MBA could even make you competitive at a top 5 MBA program.
If an MBA will help you achieve your long-term career goals, then go for it and, no, in that case it won't be a detriment to your career progression.
Thank you.
Best of luck on your applications!

OK. Two thoughts jump to mind. One, you have already applied so either you're going to get in or you're not. There is really nothing now you can do about it, so try not to stress over it.
Second and perhaps more important, these two degrees you are seeking have a lot of overlap. I'd encourage you to think hard about whether you really need both. It would be a shame to waste time and tuition on unnecessary classes.
Any input would be appreciated! Thank you!
Best of luck on your applications!

Great board and thanks in advance for the help.
I'm interested in going to a part-time MBA program here in Houston, TX. I work for a top 3 Investment Bank in the Commodities division and love my job. I graduated from a big univ. in '02 so I have 7-8 years of work experience with a great resume. My main problem is my undergrad GPA...which is around a 2.10-2.15 if I remember correctly. It's VERY BAD! I haven't taken the GMAT but took a practice test and received a 650...assuming I can get that up to closer to a 700 what kind of chance do I stand at getting into any general part-time program here in Houston to schools such as Univ. of Houston or Sam Houston St? Will that low of a GPA get me turned down regardless of my GMAT for a part-time program?
Thanks again. -Chaz |

First of all thank you for starting this it has given me a lot of information. I was hoping you could give me some feedback on my chances of getting into one of the following MBA Programs (None of them are in the top ten but they are still competetive schools):
Indiana University, Georgetown, University of Rochester, Arizona State, University of North Carolina, University of Texas, University of Virginia, and/or University of Southern California.
My profile:
Undergard: 3.12 GPA from Kelley at Indiana University, double major in MIS and Finance. GMAT: took it twice, first time 640 (85% quant, but very low verbal) Took it again and got a 690 (but quant score dropped due some timing issues I had, my fault) Verbal = 95 percentile.
Work Experience: I want to go for Fall 2010, so I will have 2 years experience by then at a small holding/investment company in Kuwait. I have tried to emphasize the fact that our country went through the worst financial crisis in 30 years, and that my company was small which meant that I had to make important decisions that impacted the company. Extra: I was a representative for my country's student union that represented the whole of the USA. We had to help new students integrate into a new environment and new culture.
Issues: My biggest issues I think are undergrad GPA ( also very spotty consistency, lots of changing classes etc., but my last 36 credits were all major classes and I received high grades, and didn't change classes at all). Also maybe not enough work experience.
I would greatly appreciate feedback.

Good question. With good career progression and a strong GMAT, you should be able to mitigate your GPA without the need for an alternate transcript.
Thanks again. -Chaz

We would want to look at your transcript to determine if you would benefit from taking some additional classes. If you are confident you can boost your overall GMAT score and perform well on the quant section, I would encourage you to take the test one more time.
It sounds like you have had some good work experience and quality will outweigh quantity. Our book contains in-depth profiles ((over 12 pages on average) on all of your target schools except Rochester and Arizona State. You might pick up some good "why XYZ MBA" pointers from it.
With well-prepared applications, you should be competitive at these schools (including the "higher ranked" schools such as UVA) given the GPA/GMAT issue is properly mitigated.
Otherwise, I think you should be competitive at schools like Arizona State with your current GPA/GMAT and well-prepared applications.
Best of luck on your applications!

Hello,
I am finishing up business school applications this month, but I wanted to get your opinion first. I plan to apply to the following schools:
Wake Forest University of Arizona Vanderbilt NC State
My profile:
Undergrad: 2.97 GPA from Roanoke College, BS in Computer Information Systems. I performed badly my freshman year but my last three years average out to a 3.2 GPA. During undergrad I also took intensive language courses in Spain at St Louis University Madrid (GPA 2.7) and business courses at University of MD - College Park (GPA 4.0)
GMAT: 590
Work Experience: I have 3.5 years experience at a small IT startup as a project manager and 3.5 years at a top 5 consulting firm where I am currently employed.
I feel that I have a pretty good story, solid goals, and substantial success in my career thus far. I plan on continuing to work in consulting and starting my own venture long-term. I am mostly concerned about my GPA and GMAT score.
What do you think? Are the schools that I am applying to out of my league?
Thanks! |
