Hi and thanks for your inquiry.
Hello, do most top 20 MBA programs check with the National Student Clearinghouse for all previous enrollment in other colleges and Universities?
I was academically disqualified while getting my 2nd Bachelor's degree 13 years ago because of lack of motivation. Since then I have successfully completed a MS in IT with a high GPA and I recently scored a 770 in my GMAT.
The only thing I can really tell you to do is be honest. It's one thing if you just took a few classes and didn't get a degree from the school. If it shows up, it wouldn't be a big deal. But ad comms expect you to be honest and they often do verification checks on admitted applicants. Additionally, if a student attends another school on the way to a BA, that usually shows up on a transcript so multiple transcripts must be requested.
Thanks
Best of luck on your applications!
Sincerely,

Hi,
Here is my profile: GMAT: 700 (90th percentile) GPA: 3.18 (B Sc. Industrial Engg from University of Wisconsin - Madison) Citizenship: India Sex: Male Profession: Management Consultant for 4 years in their Chicago office. Youngest person in the firm to become Associate (you require to have an MBA for this position)
I applied in Round 3 this year and was dinged from HBS, Chicago and Columbia. I was surprised I was dinged from Chicago and Columbia as I thought I had pretty decent quals (and even had a client recommendation from a Booth alumni who reviews MBA applications now for them). I had this Booth alum review my CBS and Booth application. I also had a former colleague (who is a current student at HBS) review my HBS application.
Questions: 1) Did I aim too high or was it a function of the large number of applicants and me applying in the late round? 2) I am thinking of applying for fall 2010 to Wharton, Berkley, Chicago (reapplicant) and UCLA. Do you think this list is crazy or do you think I should wait for another year?
Thanks a lot for the help! This is a great avenue for future applicants to get sound advice from experts.
Best regards,

Excellent question. Your GPA is a bit low and your GMAT is a bit low for your demographic. However, we would want to review your applications and determine you had optimal story themes and wow factors before we could make a realistic assessment of what happened.
2) I am thinking of applying for fall 2010 to Wharton, Berkley, Chicago (reapplicant) and UCLA. Do you think this list is crazy or do you think I should wait for another year?
It appears your profile is competitive. Assuming you didn't raise any "red flags" in your applications to HBS, Chicago and Columbia that would doom your chances as a re-applicant, you should be competitive this fall.
Thanks a lot for the help! This is a great avenue for future applicants to get sound advice from experts.
My pleasure!
Best regards,
Best of luck on your applications!

Hello everyone. I have a profile-evaluation related question for you expert folks here. Thanks in advance to those of you who take the time out to respond. My details are below:
GMAT: 720 - Indian (M/28) + IIT Bombay Graduate + MS in Comp. Sci. from Univ of Cincinnati (on scholarship). - Below avg UnderGrad GPA (too busy having fun :( ), MS GPA = 3.70/4 - During Undergrad: President of Mountaineering club (frequently lead expeditions for groups of 50-100) and was nominated as student-representative to a university-level council (interfacing with 10,000 students at the time). - Gold medal in a national physics competition in India (1 of 40 nationally awarded out of 12,000 test takers). - Selected to be trained for the Int'l Physics Olympiad (1 of ~25 nationally selected) - Couple of paper publications. - Strong. long-standing contributions to open-source/engineering community.
Professionally: - Engineer (based in US) in the world's second largest semiconductor industry (~3yrs) and a technical consultant (in India, ~1yr) - Writer; recently won a national (India) poetry award (organized by Harper Collins, judged by an Internationally known poet). - Recently won an award for outstanding contribution at my office.
Extra curriculars: - Founder and president of a local chapter for an international non-profit. - Founder and ex-president of a local poetry club. - Lead teams from UT Mccombs and Columbia in multiple business plan competitions (reached semi-finals in one; others ongoing). - semi-fluent in spanish - Piano player (2 solo concerts under the belt).
I am planning to apply to Wharton, Columbia, NYU and probably Stanford (not a 100% yet). Yale is the backup.
I'd like to get into a social entrepreneurship oriented for/non-profit focused programs. Ultimate goal is to network with fellow social entrepreneurs, understand how the business works at the grass-root levels, understand the financials of said business, and, at the end of the program, get into socially conscious wealth/capital management, or funds that focus on emerging markets, ultimately moving into green VC (in ~5-10 yrs).
Any thoughts on this? What are my chances given that I have no prior finance/capital-management background.
Thanks. |

I think you have some good aspects to your candidacy. I don't have enough of a sense for your career progression, but depending on your UGPA (sorry but I'm usually skeptical of self-reported GPA conversions as the real ones are often higher from the Indian schools), you might have a shot at the schools you are targeting. Otherwise, you may need to consider either an alternate transcript or retaking the GMAT since your score is below the median for admitted applicants from your demographic.
Please don't hesitate to call us at 703.242.5885 if you would like to discuss any of this in more detail.
Thanks.
Best of luck on your applications!

Hello and thanks for your time!
I have a quick question.
I see lots of different types of professional backgrounds accepted into top 10 MBA programs. However, the one I do not see a lot of are Sales Reps. Do sales reps have a place in these top 10 MBA programs, and if so, what other professional qualities must piggyback along with a successful sales background in order to give the best chance of acceptance? |

You won't see many sales reps in b-school because an MBA is not normally on their projected career paths. Now this said, you will find salesmen in b-school. Successful salesmen applicants have the same qualities as other successful applicants: strong story themes and 'wow' factors, a strong demonstrated fit with the school and strong career progression, extracurriculars, transcripts and GMAT scores.
Best of luck on your applications!

Hello again!
Quick question: When in highschool, I took Calculus I and II at a local Juinor College. I received an "A" in Calc I and a "B" in Calc II. My major was political science in college. I did not take any further math classes in college. In order to apply to an MBA program (like berkeley, ucla, or stanford) will I need to take a Calculus at a local college? I ask because I don't know if my JC Calc. classes equate to a university level Calc class.
Thanks in advance! |

Good question. This will largely depend upon your GMAT score and how quantitative your job is.

Hi David!
I applied as a reapplicant to NYU Stern Round 1. After being interviewed I was put on the waitlist. I assumed that was basically the same as being rejected. My question is whether a substantial number of people actually get accepted off of the NYU waitlist or if it is just a few lucky people. If I have a real chance I will try to take steps to be chosen off of the waitlist. For example, I don't want to ask another person for a letter of recommendation if there's not much hope because I'd like to be able to ask them for recommendations in the future. I have a low GPA and I'm guessing if anyone is taken off of the waitlist it is people with high GPAs that will increase the school's average GPA for the incoming class.
Stats: Female, 2.9 GPA, 730 GMAT, 5 yrs work experience (Electrical Engineer)
Thanks! Marie

Hey Dave,
Wow I'm sorry- I didn't even remember to add a QUESTION to my qualifications! How rude. I'm sorry.
I've read through some of your comments and think that they are top rate. Congratulations on what seems to be a good consulting business. In reference to what my question actually was.. here it is:
Could my stint in the Isreali Army (I'm a Jewish caucasian American)be seen as a "wow" factor as you put it for what Harvard/Stanford etc are looking for? I guess my whole appeal or "story" would be that I've been dedicated to service (social entrepreurial activities, volunteer leadership and volunteering for the Army). If I have a strong application to Harvard/Stanford/Columbia (my three dream schools for social initiative programs) what would you recommend that I let "shine"?
Thanks in advance Dave. Where are you guys based? So maybe I could hire you for an hour to pick your brain...!
Best regards, Josh

Good question. The answer is, it depends. Some years they will take more than others and it depends heavily on their yield. It would definitely behoove you to work hard to get off the waitlist as Stern will look move favorably on those applicants that show the strongest desire to attend their school.
At this point, I'm not sure how much waitlist action will help you since you have been waitlisted since R1. It might make more sense to work on your positioning for next year’s applications.
Thanks! Marie

It definitely looks like you could be competitive at the top schools. A lot of applicants have been pulling the service angle, so take care if you ultimately choose that direction. Depending on the spin, the service in the Israeli army could be a differentiating factor.
