I am thinking about going back to school, I have a four year degree, but I'll have to get a biology degree before taking the MCAT's and entering med school. I think it will take about 2 years to get the biology degree. Here's my problem/question. . . I am 26 right now and wanting to start a family within the next two years. Is this going to be possible while going to med school? By the way, I'm female, so I'd obviously have to carry the child for 9 mos as well. Please give me any and all insight! I need some guidance- hopefully from someone who has done med school with kids or been pregnant while attending. Thanks!

dermtobe: I am in a similar situation. Have you gotten any response to your post? Also you may have figured this out by now since you posted a while ago, but since you already have a 4 year degree - you don't need to get a whole other degree you just need to prereq's for med school. Some schools even have post-bach certificate programs, which is what I am doing. |

I was so happy to see this post because I am living this situation! I have a four year degree and am currently working towards a BSN, and am thinking about going premed if the logistics are there- money, access, etc... I have a two year old child whose well-being means the world to me, and I am lucky enough to have a wonderful and fully supportive husband. I think what we wish to do is possible, I believe in dreaming big. It will be very hard, and there will be huge sacrifices made- it's a lot to ask of our families no doubt, but I think that if we want it badly enough there is a way to manage both family and career. I think the key is to be fully present at each level whenever possible, to maintain some sort of balance...

I think you would find that trying to get into medical school with 2 children and BEING in medical school with 2 children would be very considerably different.

I am 26, mother to a 6-month-old, and I am currently interviewing at several schools. There is a website you should see. I am not sure if I am allowed to post a link so just google the word "mommd" and you should find it. Apparently there are many mothers in medical school. I had my baby during my senior year in college and it did not adversely affect my schooling. I went to class up until the day I gave birth and even took a biochemistry exam four days after delivering (and received an "A"). If I can manage to maintain my 4.0 through morning sickness, labor, and three months of screaming baby (while breastfeeding)...I am sure I can handle the pressures of medical school. People act like daycare doesn't exist. Of course it will be difficult, but also very rewarding. Good luck!
