I read spam is over 80% of total email sent and it's costing us billions of dollars.
I think a grass roots fihgt is the way to go.
At work we get a lot of fax spam. Its normally cheap trips to Florida and there is a toll free number to fax back to. We collect these fax spams and at the end of the day, we fax each number 50 pages of blank paper to each number. It ties up their expensive toll free line and let's them know how we feel about their wasting our paper.
Here are some rules we should follow. Feel free to add more. This could be a valauable thread.
1. Never click on anything in a spam email. Even if you want to visit a porn site or get something enlarged, find a non spam source for that need. Only about 1 in 10,000 knuckleheads have to fill out the mortgage quote or buy some stupid pill to make it profitable for the spammers so never never never ever do it. They get paid about $20 for each mortgage application and several cents for each porn click through.
2. NIgerian scams. Dear Sir, I have inherited $15 million and I need your help to get the money out of my country. I'll give 30% for your help. We've all seen this, right? Here's what to do. Email them back from a different email address. (They pass your email to other criminals.) Play them along but don't ever send them any money. Email them a weird pciture, tell them to print it out and then send you a photo of them holding it so you know what they look like. (Makes it harder to do Photo Shop.) Ask them lots of open ended questions in your emails that will take them a while to reply to. Make them do a lot of work scanning pics, replying to emails. Tell htem you sent money to them to a Western Union 100 miles from where they are. If you do this, they will be so busy with you they wont get poor Grandma who knows no better.
3. If there is a toll free number in the spam call them. Let them pay for the incoming call. Say something like "Do you like it when someone wasts your time? well neither do I so stop sending me spam" Feel free to curse them, ask them lots of questions about the product and so forth. They hate it if you ask them for a name and biz location. If they volunteer any info tell them you live nearby and want to visit.
I'm not an expert so please add or correct if you have better ideas. Poeple, we can fight and beat spam if we put our minds to it. Lets take back OUR Internet!

I'm glad I found this old thread. Now I want to bump it with an email address from a spammer. It's laura_haspens@yahoo.co.uk. Hopefully this results in spambots finding her email address.
This is her real addy. The reply to address was something made up but this was embedded in a link along with a long subject title presumably so Laura or whatever the email addy's owners real name is doesn't get spammed. Feel free to repost this eveyrone!

Just as an update, I've recently started haggling with these clowns when they offer me 20% of the proceeds and 10% for expenses.
I demand 30% and tell them they have to match the other offer I've rceeived. When they tell me how well planned their venture is, I remind them they don't know me and that's a crucial part of it. I ask for the other details so I can verify it is a good plan and I don't go to jail for them.
If you do it just right, you'll get them to put some time into a reply.

Don't forget about area code 809 scams. It is all pay per call lines and if asked to send a fax for something free to area code 809, do not. The fax will run very slow and you will get a huge bill. |

MCI Caller: Hello sir, I'm calling from MCI. How are you doing today?
Me: I'm fine.
MCI Caller: Well I'm sure you're getting plenty of calls about your long distance service, but you're probably still paying over $10 a month. Is that true?
Me: No. I use my cell phone for long distance.
MCI Caller: Oh, well I bet you probably have to wait until after 9pm or something.
Me: No. I use it to call my family and that is free all the time.
MCI Caller: But you probably have friends you would like to call and catch up with.
Me: No. I talk to them online.
MCI Caller: But I'm sure you miss their voices and want the chance to talk to them more often.
Me: No. I don't like the phone. I'll call them after 9 if I want.
MCI Caller: Well, I'm sure that you are at least paying a fee to have long distance service in case your cell phone dies or something.
Me: No. No fee.
MCI Caller: You know, like some kind of base fee to use long distance that you pay every month.
Me. No.

Still haven't heard from Paul. Guess he won't give me the satisfaction of saying he callled a fake diploma place. Oh well. Maybe if we all give these nubmers to the Nigerian scammers, we could end Nigerian scam emails and fake diploma emails.
P.S. You don't think I really missed out on a lifetime opportunity? If he was telling the truth and he reached out to me and I could have 20% of that many million right now I'll be quite upset.

Paul has disappointed me. I think he has decided I'm trying to waste his time. How evil when considered what he is trying to do.
I just sent him the following. That number was in several spams that got past my filter. It is for a life experience degree. No bettter ideas came to me since my last post. I hope they enjoy talking to each other.

Still nothing from Paul. He seems to want my money witout working for it. I think I will cave in next time I hear from him and give him teh number of one of those fake diploma mills that keep spamming me. Let him talk to them. Seems pretty good.

I got 2 emails tilted "Re:" from Paul. One is a long list of email addresses. Guess he didn't mean to send that.
The other is:
If you are ready for us to kick off with this once in a life time opprtunity transaction, then you must provide detaila s to all I will need to send to the registry for legal authentication of your being a next of kin to the late Mitchel.
Send also youyr contact telephone number so that I can reach you too.

I almost gave up on you. I am still waiting for a response to my last email. If you didn't get it, please respond to my questions immediately so we can move forward. I have a big vacation coming up and I can't cancel it without fears of raising suspicion. Hence, it is ugrent we get this done quickly or we will have to postpone it a few more weeks which neither of us want.
I have 2 questions.
1. It seems unnecessarily risky that you should go to the International Division if I can do that for you. They are going to have my information anyway, so why should both of us risk our necks. If something happens to me, I can trust you will work to help me from the outside since you won’t be in the same mess as me.
2. The trust issue. You know who I am. Do you have access to a camera and scanner? I’d like a picture I know is of you. I’d like you to print out the front page of cnn.com, hold it in one hand and hold a picture of your photo ID in the other hand. Take the picture high resolution and email it to me.
I did bold and red font the 2 questions for Paul just like I did here. I hope the travel remark makes him think there is a lot of money to empty from my account.
I might ask why he sent me an email with a bunch of email addresses in my next message.

For anyone wondering, our friend Rodney seems to be intent on picking a figtht with me. Because Michael Moore wrote Farenheit 911, that became gospel. Rodney does not seem able to or willing to think for himself. He is using an argument eerily similar to the see Mel Gibson's Passion movie as if to imply Mel Gibson must be correct and thinks for those who were so adamant about his movie. I'm not sure if Rodney is a 13 yo middle school outcast, but I think wtih his bad logic, he won't do well enough on the GMAT to be my classmate.
For the last time Rodney, I have already argued the case for Bush. Here's the recap though. Bin Laden didn't expect to be routed out of Afghanistan and he must be upset at what happened to Iraq. When dealing with psychos who believe the 9/11 terrorists are in paradise with their Allah and having hedonist sex with hundreds of virgins, they are only going to understand force. Go find some political board if you want to continue your assinine Michael Moore said so arguments.
